After completing an oenology degree from Roseworthy College, Colin gained wide and diverse winemaking experience in many of Australia’s noted wine regions including the Hunter Valley, Rutherglen, Great Western and the Barossa Valley. He has also worked in Burgundy and in the United Kingdom.
Colin moved to the Barossa in 1985 to run Barossa Valley Estate, where he created the now revered E & E Black Pepper Shiraz and the Ebenezer range of wines.
After thirty years of winemaking experience Colin, along with wife Judith and their three sons, established Glaetzer Wines in 1995. The first vintage release occurred a year later.
Colin is a Baron of the Barossa - a title awarded in recognition of his winemaking skills and his contribution to the cultural traditions of the Barossa Valley.
Ben Glaetzer makes unique, elegant wines with minimal intervention, which are regarded as classics and unmistakably Barossan. His ability to blend traditional winemaking techniques with a modern flair is reflected in the style of all wines under the Glaetzer label.
All fruit for Glaetzer Wines is taken from the small sub-region of the northern Barossa Valley, called Ebenezer. Exceptional quality fruit from a loyal group of third and fourth generation family growers is the backbone of Glaetzer wines.
Ben describes his winemaking philosophy as 'being guided more by the artistic side in flavours, aromatics and the overall personality of a wine…art comes into it when allowing a natural process to occur rather than trying to influence it'.
