Glaetzer Shiraz, Barossa Valley 2002Now Sold Out Colin Glaetzer established his own label, Glaetzer Wines, to create the wines he's passionate about - limited quantities of benchmark Barossa reds. This family-owned company is an expression of more than 30 years of winemaking for Colin, and a new chapter for the Glaetzers who have been in the Barossa since 1888. Colin and his winemaker son Ben craft small volumes of super-premium wines, using exceptional fruit from ancient, dry-grown vineyards in the Ebenezer district of the valley. With minimal intervention, they turn this fruit into wines which show Glaetzer's trademark elegance and softness. Glaetzer Shiraz is the family's flagship wine. This limited production, luxury wine is made exclusively with premium fruit sourced from 80-year-old, dry grown vines in the Ebenezer district of the Barossa. This is a powerful, rich wine which blends intensity with the Glaetzer hallmarks of complexity and elegance . A food-friendly wine, Glaetzer Shiraz is dark purple in colour, with some hints of red. A brooding nose which takes time in the glass to evolve. Initially showing cracked pepper, mulberry and wisps of earthy spice the wine shows a multitude of aromas after breathing to display ripe plums and crushed herbs. The palate has supple tannin structure which supports masses of briary fruit and rich chocolate and roasted coffee flavours. The wine will age well for 10 years. The revered wine critic Robert M Parker Jr, in his widely acclaimed The Wine Advocate Issue # 155, awarded 2002 Glaetzer Shiraz 95 points and said, “The flagship offering, the 2002 Shiraz, is produced from 90- to 100-year-old dry-farmed vineyard that yielded a microscopic .25-1 tom of fruit per acre. Aged 15 months in 100% new American oak barrels and hogsheads, its inky/purple color is accompanied by tantalizing aromas of charcoal, acacia flowers, blackberry liqueur, blueberries, and cassis. This deep, full-bodied, smoky, rich, full-throttle Shiraz is remarkably well-balanced as well as intense. Give it 1-3 more years of bottle age, and drink it following 10-15.” COLIN AND BEN GLAETZER Technical Details Winemaker: Colin Glaetzer, Ben Glaetzer Vinification: The wine was initially fermented in small, open vats and then completed in American oak puncheons (new and up to two years old).
