Glaetzer Bishop Shiraz, Barossa Valley 2002Now Sold Out Colin Glaetzer established his own label, Glaetzer Wines, to create the wines he's passionate about - limited quantities of benchmark Barossa reds. This family-owned company is an expression of more than 30 years of winemaking for Colin, and a new chapter for the Glaetzers who have been in the Barossa since 1888. Colin and his winemaker son Ben craft small volumes of super-premium wines, using exceptional fruit from ancient, dry-grown vineyards in the Ebenezer district of the valley. With minimal intervention, they turn this fruit into wines which show Glaetzer's trademark elegance and softness. Bishop Shiraz shares many qualities with its "big brother" Glaetzer Shiraz but is not merely a shadow of that wine. The full-bodied wine is made predominantly from 30 to 60-year-old vines at Ebenezer and always contains material from the oldest 80-year-old vines. This ensures the Glaetzer "house" style is evident. In colour the 2002 Glaetzer Bishop is deep red with purple hues. A lifted nose of ripe plums, cinnamon and spice leads to flavours of liquorice and nutmeg supported by firm, rounded tannin. The wine shows a hint of French oak which adds extra dimension to the wine's complexity. The wine will age well for 6 to 8 years. The name Bishop is a family name of Colin’s wife Judith. The revered wine critic Robert M Parker Jr, in his widely acclaimed The Wine Advocate Issue # 155, awarded 2002 Glaetzer Bishop Shiraz 93 points and said, “The stunning 2002 Bishop (100% Shiraz from 40-80 year old vines) was aged 16 months in primarily old American hogsheads (300-500 liter barrels). This is a superb example of Barossa Shiraz, combining power and concentration with a sense of balance and symmetry. Dense purple-coloured with a gorgeous nose of sweet cassis intertwined with a new saddle leather, spice box, and licorice, this full-bodied, unctuously-textured effort boasts tremendous intensity, good tannic structure, decent acidity, and a long, heady finish. The 14% alcohol content is relatively restrained by Barossa standards.” COLIN AND BEN GLAETZER Technical Details Winemaker: Colin Glaetzer, Ben Glaetzer Vinification: After initial fermentation in small, open vats, the wine is aged in seasoned American and French hogsheads for 18 months. |
