AMON-RA SHIRAZ 2002 MCLAREN VALE (95-98)

The second releases from winemaker/proprietor Ben Glaetzer, Amon-Ra appears set to emerge as one of South Australia's world-class producers.  Both of these barrel samples are final blends scheduled to be bottled in less than sixty days.  They are thrilling efforts that emphasize fruit, texture, and extraordinary aromatics.  The 2002 Barossa Shiraz (from yields of .5 tons of fruit per acre) was fermented in both French and American wood, left on its lees during malolactic as well as for three months after.  Aged in 100% new American oak, it will be bottled without filtration.  The inky blue/purple/black color is accompanied by aromas of creosote, scorched earth, black as well as blueberries, creme de cassis, and subtle vanilla.  The extraordinary aromatics are followed by a wine of size, power, great richness, delineation and amazing depth as well as intensity.  The finish lasts more than a minute.  This exquisite 2002 is one of the most compelling offerings I tasted in the overall impressive performance of the 2001 and 2002 South Australian vintages.  Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020. 

The 2002 Shiraz McLaren Vale was sourced from a 110-year old vineyard with yields of .75 tons of fruit per acre.  It was aged in American oak, of which two-thirds were new.  It boasts a black/blue color in addition to aromas of acacia flowers, liquid minerals, and copious amounts of black fruits.  Extremely full-bodied, with terrific stuffing, texture, and length, it reveals tremendous presence on the palate without being overdone, overripe, or overly heavy.  This sensational Shiraz is slightly more backward and lighter than its Barossa sibling.  Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020.
