Colin Glaetzer: the latest red Baron of the BarossaPress ReleaseApr 2003 Barossa winemaker Colin Glaetzer has been honoured with life membership to the invitation-only Barons of the Barossa wine fraternity. Colin was welcomed into the group at a dinner at Chateau Tanunda on Friday, April 25 th surrounded by family and friends.
He joins the ranks of other Barossa Barons and wine luminaries including his twin brother John Glaetzer, Stephen Henschke, Peter Lehmann, Wolf Blass, Nigel Dolan, and Karl Seppelt. "It's a real honour. I work in a great part of the world, surrounded by people who put excellence into everything they do - that's what it's all about," Colin says. The Barons of the Barossa was founded in 1974 to recognise those who have made an outstanding contribution to Barossan culture, and in particular, its wines. It follows centuries-old traditions of wine fraternities in France , Germany and Spain . Barossa Barons wear colourful ceremonial regalia which reflects the Valley's origins and its link with European migration. The Glaetzer family has been part of the Barossa's fabric since 1888. Colin's distinguished, 30-year-winemaking career has seen many achievements, including his creation of the revered Barossa Valley Estates E & E Black Pepper Shiraz. His small, family-owned winery - Glaetzer Wines - has a reputation for superlative Shiraz made with fruit from ancient,80-year-old, dry-grown vineyards at Ebenezer. Imperials of 1998 Glaetzer Shiraz were served at the induction ceremony, in a fitting tribute to Colin's wine making talents.
