The Australian Wine Journal 2007Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine AnnualNov 2006 Among the dozens of wines made by Ben Glaetzer at the Barossa Vintners winery are several that find their way under the Glaetzer label. At the top of the tree sits the sumptuous and finely crafted Amon-Ra Shiraz, which makes its debut in this guide at a very high level, and deservedly so. The second red, the Godolphin Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon, rates 95 points (drink 2012-2016+) for its inaugural 2004 release. As for the other shirazes from 2004, Simply delicious. 2004 Amon-Ra Shiraz - 94 points A supremely ripe and confiture-like modern Barossa shiraz whose ethereal, musky and briary aromas of blackcurrant, dark Swiss chocolate, dark olives, stewed plums, nutmeg and cinnamon are backed by smoky nuances of mocha/vanilla oak. Deeply ripened and slightly meaty, its substantial and luxuriant palate of sumptuous fruit is framed by firm but silky-smooth tannins, finishing long, savoury and slightly mineral. 2004 Bishop Shiraz - 91 points A seductive smooth and sumptuous easy and early drinking red with a violet-like perfume of cassis, spearmint and cedar/chocolate oak. Its vibrant berry flavours are unobtrusively supported by oak and framed by supple, gentle tannins. Very sexy. 2004 Glaetzer Shiraz - 93 points Smooth, polished and artfully balanced, with a spicy and floral fragrance of violets, white pepper and cloves beneath pristine aromas of cassis, plums and blackberries. Restrained cedar/vanilla oak also underpins its silky palate of deep blackberry, dark plum and blueberry flavours, along with nuances of dark olives and minerals.
