Glaetzer Bishop : Dry years' hot stuff

Andrew Hardy, general manager of Petaluma in Adelaide Hills, The Advertiser, South Australia
 May 2005

Andrew Hardy, general manager of Petaluma in Adelaide Hills, samples the big reds of the BarossaValley.

“Some of my earliest wine memories are of the Barossa, having grown up in a wine family.  The Hardys were, however, a McLaren Vale-based company, culminating with my great-great-grandfather buying Dr Kelly’s vineyard in 1877, adding to his existing holdings….Tasting Barossa shiraz is always exciting, and for this selection East End Cellars has chosen four which represent the Valley.  Two vintages, 2001 and 2003, both drought years and both hot, are featured, and the wines here show some of the diversity of the region, while being typically Barossa. …These Barossa shiraz wines all show the trademark big, ripe fruit characters…”

Glaetzer Bishop 2001 - 91 points

Colour: Brick-red, light purple hues

Nose: Big dark chocolate, mixed with very ripe black fruits.  A touch of lovely old leather, and some anise.

Taste:  Gentle and soft.  Has some delicious dark fruit on the palate with hints of liquorice.  Has good grip and a lingering finish.  Vanillin sweet oak is perhaps still dominant.  Still very youthful for a four-year-old and could do with a little longer in the cellar.
